This profound parable of men and women confronting their own difficulties in realizing the force of God within themselves presents a challenging and incisive commentary on the nature of religion and human capabilities. The setting is a village in north east india, but the site would be anywhere in the universe, and the forest a trio of villagers need to go through to reach mysteriously appearing figures of Krishna, Jesus and Mohammed could be the thicket all humans pass through to experience a true religious awakening.
After a number of lethal failures by the villagers, whose faith rises and falls as the drama ensues, the way to success and salvation is revealed by Vignesh, a gatekeeper to the forest which has dangerous man-eating beasts. Throughout the tale the insights in human consciousness are both dramatic and compelling.
